Most people notice it when they strip the bed. The sheets are clean, the room is clean, and there is still a faint stale smell that the fresh sheet covers for two days before it returns.
That smell is almost always moisture. A sleeping body loses a surprising amount of water every night, and over years it goes into the foam where it cannot evaporate properly. In a humid city it is worse, and in December fog a mattress may not dry out for weeks at a time.
Work out which smell it is
| Smell | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Musty, like a closed cupboard | Trapped moisture, possibly mould starting |
| Stale and slightly sour | Years of sweat and body oil in the foam |
| Sharp, like ammonia | Urine, from a child, an illness or a pet |
| Chemical, on a new mattress | Off-gassing; it fades in a few days with airing |
| Damp with visible black spots | Mould. This one is different — see below |
The method
Do this on a dry, sunny day, and start in the morning so there is time.
- Strip the bed completely and wash everything, including the mattress protector.
- Vacuum the whole surface, slowly, with attention to the seams and the piping where dust collects.
- Sprinkle baking soda generously — a whole packet for a king mattress is not too much — and work it lightly into the surface with a hand.
- Leave it for several hours. Four is useful, overnight is better, and up to 24 hours for a strong smell. Open the windows and let the sun into the room.
- Vacuum it all off, going over the surface twice.
- If the smell remains, mist lightly with a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water — mist, do not soak — and let it dry completely with a fan or an open window. Never put the sheet back on a mattress that is still damp.
One thing to get right: do not use vinegar and baking soda at the same time. They neutralise each other and you get a fizz and no result. Use one, let it work, vacuum, then use the other if needed.
For urine and protein smells
Baking soda alone rarely finishes the job here, because the smell comes from compounds that need breaking down rather than absorbing.
- Blot up as much as possible immediately — never rub, and never pour water on it.
- Use an enzyme cleaner, sold for pet accidents, which digests the residue rather than covering it. Follow the dwell time on the bottle.
- Then do the baking soda step, and dry completely with a fan.
- Expect to repeat it. One treatment of an old mark rarely works.
Drying is the whole battle
Everything above fails if the mattress does not dry out properly afterwards.
- Air it bare for a few hours every month or two, ideally with sun in the room. This alone prevents most smells.
- Lift it off a solid base occasionally. A mattress on a solid platform with no ventilation stays damp underneath, and the underside is where musty smells usually start.
- Do not dry washing in the bedroom. It is the fastest way to raise the humidity in the room.
- Use a fan after any wet treatment, for longer than feels necessary. Damp foam grows mould that cannot be removed.
When it is mould, not smell
Black or green spotting, a smell that returns within a day of cleaning, or a musty mattress in a room with damp walls — this is beyond home cleaning. Mould grows into foam, and surface cleaning removes the colour without removing the growth. Replace the mattress, and deal with the damp in the room, or the new one will go the same way.
Stopping it happening again
This is the only part that really matters long-term, because a mattress cannot be washed and every smell that gets into it is permanent to some degree.
- Use a protector and wash it monthly. It takes the sweat that would otherwise go into the foam — our mattress protectors start at Rs 2,300, and this guide explains the reasoning.
- Choose a quilted protector with a fabric face rather than plain plastic sheeting, which makes you sweat more and traps the moisture against the mattress — the ultrasonic quilted protector at Rs 2,899 is the padded version.
- Change sheets weekly in summer. Our guide to how often sheets need changing has the full schedule.
- Air the room daily, except during smog peaks — see the smog season guide.
- Rotate the mattress every three months, which is also when you should air it — how to make a mattress last longer covers the whole routine.
Our crystal cotton king sets are Rs 2,399 with free delivery and cash on delivery across Pakistan — and owning two means the bed can be stripped and aired without anyone sleeping on a bare mattress that night.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a musty smell out of a mattress?
Vacuum it, cover it with baking soda for several hours or overnight, vacuum again, then mist lightly with equal parts vinegar and water if needed and dry it completely.
Can I use vinegar and baking soda together on a mattress?
No. They neutralise each other. Use one, let it work, vacuum it off, and only then use the other.
Why does my mattress smell even though the sheets are clean?
Years of sweat and moisture have gone into the foam, where they cannot evaporate. It is especially common on mattresses used without a protector.
How do I remove a urine smell from a mattress?
Blot, then use an enzyme cleaner rather than detergent, then baking soda, then dry thoroughly with a fan. Old marks usually need more than one treatment.
When should I replace a smelly mattress?
When there is visible black or green mould, or when the smell returns within a day of cleaning. Mould grows into the foam and cannot be cleaned out.
