Smog Season at Home: Keeping Dust Out of the Bedroom

From late October the air in Lahore and most of Punjab turns grey, and the dust ends up on everything you sleep in. Here is what genuinely keeps it out of the bedroom, and what is a waste of effort.

Smog Season at Home: Keeping Dust Out of the Bedroom

Smog season in Punjab now runs from late October through to January, with November and December the worst of it. Everybody talks about masks and air purifiers, which matter outdoors and in the lounge. Far less is said about the bedroom, where you spend eight unbroken hours breathing whatever has settled.

Fine smog particles are much smaller than ordinary dust. They drift in through gaps, settle into fabric, and cling. You cannot filter the whole city, but a bedroom is a small room with a door, and that makes it the one space you can realistically keep clean.

Close the gaps first

Most of the smog in your bedroom walked in under the door or round the window frame. Before buying anything:

  • Keep windows shut during the two daily peaks — roughly 7 to 9 in the morning and 5 to 9 in the evening, when traffic pollution is heaviest.
  • Fit a foam strip or a cloth draught stopper along the bottom of the bedroom door. It costs very little and is the single most effective physical change.
  • Check the gaps around window frames, and the hole where the AC pipe passes through the wall — that one is almost always open.
  • Ventilate when the air improves, usually midday or after rain. Check the AQI for your city rather than guessing by how it looks.

The bedding routine that matters in these months

Smog particles settle on the bed all day and you lie down in them at night. Three changes make the difference:

  1. Wash bedsheets weekly, not fortnightly, through the smog months. This is the main one.
  2. Do not shake the sheet out inside the room. Shaking lifts everything into the air for it to resettle, mostly on the bed. Fold it in on itself and carry it out.
  3. Cover the mattress. A protector takes the dust that works its way through the sheet, and goes in the machine; the mattress cannot. See our mattress protectors, and the related guide on dust allergy in the bedroom, which covers the same ground from the health side.

Drying is the one genuine complication. Washing dried outdoors in heavy smog picks the pollution straight back up. On bad-AQI days dry indoors in a room other than the bedroom, or on a covered balcony, and save sun-drying for clear days.

Fewer dust traps near the bed

Every soft surface in the room holds particles. You do not need a bare room, only fewer things that cannot be washed.

  • Heavy decorative cushions with no removable cover collect dust all winter. Covers that come off and go in the machine are the point — see our cushion and pillow covers.
  • Keep stored bedding in a closed bag or box, not open on an almirah shelf, or you will wash it before you can use it.
  • Soft toys on the bed are dust reservoirs. A shelf is fine; the bed is not.
  • Thick rugs beside the bed hold more than a bare floor. If you keep one, it needs vacuuming weekly in these months.

Protect the appliances too

Smog season is also when the AC sits unused for months and the outdoor unit takes the worst of the air. Covering both the indoor and outdoor units keeps the dust out of the fins, so you are not paying for a service visit in April. Our AC cover set is Rs 1,499, and the AC cover guide explains the right time to put them on. The same applies to the fridge top, where dust and cooking grease combine into a film that is hard to remove — a washable quilted fridge cover takes it instead.

What is worth buying, and what is not

  • Worth it: a door draught stopper; an extra bedsheet set so weekly washing is realistic; a mattress protector; a HEPA purifier for the bedroom if the budget allows, since a bedroom is small enough for one to actually work.
  • Not worth it: air fresheners and room sprays, which add particles rather than removing them; scented candles and incense, for the same reason; mosquito coils indoors; "anti-dust" sprays for fabric.
  • Check before trusting: an AC filter is built to protect the machine, not to clean fine smog particles out of the air. It helps a little, not much.

A realistic winter routine

  • Daily: door and windows shut during the morning and evening peaks.
  • Weekly: bedsheets and pillow covers washed, floor mopped, window sills wiped.
  • Monthly: mattress protector washed, AC filter cleaned, curtains shaken out outdoors.
  • Once in the season: stored winter bedding aired on a clear day before it goes on the bed — our changeover checklist covers that.

Two sets per bed is what makes the weekly wash possible instead of aspirational. Our crystal cotton king sets are Rs 2,399 with free delivery and cash on delivery anywhere in Pakistan, and the washing guide covers keeping the colour through a winter of frequent washes.

One honest limit: none of this is medical advice. If someone in the house has asthma or a persistent cough through the smog months, see a doctor. Cleaner bedding helps; it does not treat anything.

Frequently asked questions

When is smog season in Pakistan?
Late October to January in Punjab, with the worst air usually through November and December. Pollution peaks in the early morning and again in the evening.

How often should I wash bedsheets during smog season?
Weekly. Fine particles settle on the bed all day, and a weekly wash through the smog months makes a noticeable difference to how the room feels.

Should I dry washing outside in smog?
Not on bad-air days — damp fabric picks the pollution straight back up. Dry indoors or on a covered balcony, and save sun-drying for clear days.

Do air fresheners help with smog indoors?
No. They mask smell and add particles and fumes. Sealing gaps, washing bedding and damp cleaning are what actually reduce indoor dust.

Does an AC filter clean smog from the air?
Only slightly. A standard AC filter exists to protect the unit, not to capture fine particles. A HEPA purifier in the bedroom does far more.

How to Get the Smell Out of a Mattress

A mattress that smells is holding moisture, and masking it with spray makes it worse. The fix is dull and effective: dry it out, draw the smell out, and keep it from coming back.
