Almost every Pakistani home has one: a takht in the baithak, a diwan along one wall, or a wooden platform that is a sofa during the day and a bed at night. And almost nobody sells a bedsheet labelled for it.
So people buy a single sheet and find it does not reach, or a king and find a foot of fabric pooling on the floor. The fix is not a special product. It is two minutes with a measuring tape.
Why no shop sells a "takht size" sheet
Because there is no standard. A takht is usually made by a local carpenter to fit the room, so widths vary enormously — one in a Lahore baithak and one in a Karachi flat may differ by a foot. Diwans sold as furniture are more consistent but still vary by maker.
What this means in practice: ignore size names and buy on inches, which is the same advice as for an ordinary bed in our bed sheet size guide.
How to measure in two minutes
- Width and length of the top surface, in inches. Measure the platform or the mattress, whichever the sheet will sit on.
- Depth of the mattress or gadda on top of it.
- Decide how far it should hang. For a takht against a wall you only need overhang on the two or three open sides.
- The sum: width + (2 × depth) + 12 inches for tuck, and the same for length. If the takht sits against a wall, subtract the tuck on that side.
Write both numbers down and take them shopping. A seller who will not state the inches on a listing is telling you something — our guide to judging an online shop covers that signal.
Which standard size usually fits
| Furniture | Typical top surface | Sheet that usually fits |
|---|---|---|
| Single bed | About 42 × 78 in | Single, around 60 × 90 in |
| Narrow takht / diwan | About 36–48 × 72–78 in | Single, around 60 × 90 in |
| Wide takht | About 54–60 × 78 in | Double, or a king if it is deep |
| Double bed | About 54 × 78 in | Double, around 90 × 90 in |
| King bed | About 72 × 78 in | King, around 90 × 100 in |
Two cautions. Some imported mattresses are 39 inches rather than 42, which is enough to leave a single sheet loose. And a takht with a thick cotton gadda needs far more fabric than the top measurement suggests — depth is what catches people out.
Stopping the sheet sliding off
A takht has no mattress edge to tuck under, which is why sheets slide. Things that work:
- Buy generously and tuck deep. Extra fabric trapped under the gadda is what holds a flat sheet in place.
- Tuck the two long sides first, then the ends, pulling diagonally.
- Sheet grippers or elastic suspenders clip underneath and cost very little.
- A heavier fabric stays put. Slippery satin on a wooden takht slides all day; cotton and crystal cotton grip. Our fabric guide covers the difference.
- A mattress protector underneath adds friction as well as protecting the gadda from tea and children — see our mattress protectors.
Dressing a baithak takht so it looks deliberate
A takht is furniture before it is a bed, so it should be dressed like seating.
- Gol pillows at either end are what make a takht look finished rather than like a stripped bed. Our gol pillow covers are Rs 2,700 a pair, and the gol pillow guide covers sizes.
- Three to five cushions along the back, not a row of ten — our cushion styling guide explains the count.
- Keep one pattern. If the sheet is printed, keep the cushions plain.
- A folded throw across one corner hides the join where the sheet meets the frame.
- Wall art above it anchors the whole arrangement; if you rent, our no-nails guide covers putting it up without drilling.
When guests sleep on it
A takht becomes a guest bed at short notice, usually in wedding season. Keep a set aside for it so you are not stripping your own bed at 11 p.m. — our guest room checklist lists the rest of what a visitor actually needs.
Our crystal cotton sets are Rs 2,399 for a king size 3 piece set, and a king sheet is often the right choice for a deep takht precisely because of the extra fabric for tucking. Free delivery and cash on delivery anywhere in Pakistan.
Frequently asked questions
What size bedsheet fits a takht?
There is no standard takht size, so measure it. A narrow takht usually takes a single sheet of about 60 × 90 inches; a wide or deep one often needs a double or king for enough tuck.
What size is a diwan bedsheet?
Diwan sets are commonly sold around 60 × 90 inches, with larger versions up to 70 × 100. Measure your platform first, because diwans vary by maker.
How do I stop a bedsheet sliding off a takht?
Buy a size larger than the top surface so there is fabric to tuck deep underneath, use sheet grippers, and choose cotton rather than slippery satin.
What is a single bed size in Pakistan?
Usually about 42 × 78 inches, though some imported mattresses are 39 inches wide. Single sheets are commonly around 60 × 90 inches to allow for tucking.
How do I measure for a bedsheet?
Width plus twice the mattress depth plus about 12 inches for tuck, and the same calculation for the length. Subtract the tuck on any side that sits against a wall.
