A bedsheet rarely wears out. It gets thrown away because of a stain that would not come out, often one that was made worse by the first attempt to remove it.
Almost every stain follows the same two rules. Cold water, not hot, because heat sets protein and pigment stains permanently. And blot, do not rub, because rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the weave and roughens the print.
The three-minute rule
Whatever has spilled, do this before you look up anything else:
- Lift off whatever is sitting on the surface with a spoon or the back of a knife. Do not wipe.
- Hold the stained area under cold running water from the back of the fabric, so the water pushes the stain out the way it came in rather than through the sheet.
- Only then decide what the stain is and treat it.
A stain treated within minutes usually comes out completely. The same stain after a week in the wash basket often does not.
Haldi (turmeric)
The one everybody asks about, especially in wedding season. Turmeric stains are difficult for two reasons: curcumin is a strong dye, and it arrives mixed with oil.
- Scrape off the paste. Rinse from the back with cold water.
- Put a drop of dishwashing liquid directly on the mark and work it in gently with a finger — this deals with the oil.
- Make a paste of baking soda and a little cold water, cover the stain and leave it 15 to 20 minutes.
- Rinse, then rub in fresh lemon juice and leave the sheet in direct sunlight for an hour while still damp. Sunlight breaks curcumin down better than any detergent.
- Wash cold as usual. Check before drying — if a yellow tinge remains, repeat. Never put it in a dryer or in strong sun to dry until the mark is gone.
Lemon juice can lift colour from dark prints, so test it on a hem or inside a pillow cover first.
Mehndi
Mehndi stains behave like haldi but are more stubborn, because the paste is designed to bond with what it touches.
- Let the paste dry fully, then scrape it off. Wet mehndi smeared across a sheet is a much bigger mark.
- Soak in cold water with a little detergent for 30 minutes.
- Treat with a paste of baking soda and white vinegar; expect it to fizz. Leave 20 minutes, rinse, repeat if needed.
- Accept that a very dark mehndi mark on a light sheet may fade rather than vanish. This is one reason a darker printed sheet is sensible during a wedding week — see our bridal bedsheet guide.
Chai, coffee and food colour
- Rinse from the back with cold water immediately.
- Mix one part white vinegar with two parts cold water, soak the stain for 10 minutes.
- Rub a little detergent in with your fingers and rinse.
- For an old, dried chai ring, soak the whole area in cold water for an hour first to soften it.
Milk in the chai adds a protein element, which is another reason never to use hot water — it cooks the protein into the fibres.
Oil and food grease
- Sprinkle talcum powder, cornflour or baking soda thickly on the mark and leave it 20 minutes to draw the oil out.
- Brush the powder off, then work dishwashing liquid into the mark with a finger.
- Rinse with the warmest water the sheet tolerates — grease is the one exception to the cold-water rule, though keep it lukewarm on printed cotton.
Blood
- Cold water only. Warm water sets blood permanently within seconds.
- Rinse from the back, then cover the mark with a paste of salt and cold water, or plain baking soda, for 20 minutes.
- Hydrogen peroxide works on white sheets but will bleach a printed one. Do not use it on colour.
- For a dried mark, soak overnight in cold salted water before washing.
Ink and makeup
Dab, do not pour. Put a clean cloth underneath the stain, then work from the top with a cotton bud dipped in surgical spirit or hand sanitiser, changing the cloth underneath as it takes up the ink. Rinse cold and wash.

Three things that make stains permanent
- Hot water. It sets haldi, blood, milk and most food colour. Nearly every "this will not come out" sheet met hot water first.
- Drying before checking. Heat from the sun or a dryer bakes in whatever is left. Always look at the wet sheet before you hang it.
- Bleach on a printed sheet. It removes the stain and the print together, leaving a pale patch that is more visible than the stain was.
Preventing the worst of it
Most of the permanent damage in a bedroom happens below the sheet, not on it — a spill goes through to the mattress, where it cannot be washed out at all. A waterproof mattress protector takes that instead, and the ultrasonic quilted protector at Rs 2,899 adds a padded layer as well. Our guide explains why every bed needs one, and how to make a mattress last longer covers the rest.
Owning two sets per bed also helps more than any stain remover: a marked sheet can be soaked properly for a few hours instead of being rushed back onto the bed by evening. Our crystal cotton king sets are Rs 2,399 with free delivery and cash on delivery across Pakistan, and the washing guide covers keeping the print bright between washes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove a haldi stain from a bedsheet?
Scrape off the paste, rinse from the back with cold water, treat with dish soap and then a baking soda paste, rub in lemon juice and leave the damp sheet in direct sunlight for an hour before washing cold.
Does hot water remove stains better?
No. Hot water permanently sets turmeric, blood, milk and most food colour. Use cold water for almost everything, with lukewarm water only for oily marks.
Can I use bleach on a printed bed sheet?
No. Bleach removes the print along with the stain and leaves a pale patch. Use baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice or sunlight instead.
How do I get an old, dried stain out?
Soak the area in cold water for an hour, or overnight for blood, to rehydrate the stain, then treat it as if it were fresh. Repeat before drying rather than washing once and hoping.
How do I stop spills reaching the mattress?
Use a waterproof mattress protector under the sheet. A sheet can be washed; a mattress cannot, and a liquid spill that reaches the foam usually never dries out completely.
