How to Choose a Comforter for a Pakistani Winter

Comforters start selling in October and most people buy on the print. Filling and weight decide whether you are warm in December, and they are the two things listings mention least.

How to Choose a Comforter for a Pakistani Winter

October is when the quilts come out of the almirah and people discover last year's is not warm enough. The replacement is usually chosen by looking at the print, which is how so many homes end up with a comforter that is either too thin for Islamabad or far too hot for Karachi.

Three things decide whether a comforter works: what is inside it, how much of it there is, and whether it is the right size for the bed. The pattern on the outside decides nothing except how the room looks.

1. The filling

FillingFeels likeSuitsWatch for
Siliconised microfibreLight, puffy, warm for its weightMost Pakistani homesCheap versions flatten and clump after a season
Cotton / rueeHeavy, breathable, traditionalCold cities, people who dislike syntheticHeavy to wash and slow to dry
Polyester fibre (plain)Light but less warmTight budgets, mild wintersTraps moisture; can feel clammy
Down or featherVery light and very warmRarely sold in PakistanExpensive, and difficult to clean here

For most buyers the real contest is siliconised microfibre against cotton filling. Microfibre is lighter, dries faster and costs less; cotton breathes better and lasts longer if you look after it. In a damp coastal city, breathability matters more than you expect.

2. The weight, which nobody states clearly

Warmth comes from how much filling is packed in, usually described as GSM. Pakistani listings often skip this entirely, so judge by hand: a winter comforter should feel substantially heavier than a summer quilt, and the filling should spring back rather than stay flat when you press it.

  • Karachi, Hyderabad, coastal Sindh: a light comforter is enough. Many people use only a thick bedsheet and a blanket.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan: a medium-weight comforter covers the whole winter.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar, north Punjab: a heavier one, or a medium one plus a blanket on the coldest nights.
  • Murree, Quetta, Gilgit, upper KP: the heaviest you can find, and a khaddar bedsheet underneath.

A room with no heating needs more than a room with a gas heater that runs all evening — which, given gas pressure in winter, is most people's reality. Our guide on keeping a bedroom warm without a heater covers the rest of that problem.

3. The size, measured properly

A comforter should hang over the sides of the mattress, not sit on top of it like a sheet. The commonest complaint in winter is two people pulling at one quilt, and it is nearly always a sizing problem rather than a marriage problem.

  1. Measure the mattress width and add at least 20 inches, so there is 10 inches of overhang each side.
  2. For a king bed in Pakistan that usually means a comforter around 90 × 100 inches or larger.
  3. If two people sleep under it, size up rather than down.

Our size guide has the bed measurements, and the shell of the comforter should match the size convention the rest of your bedding uses.

4. The shell fabric

The outer cover affects how it feels against you and how it washes, but it does not decide warmth — a cotton-shelled comforter with light filling is cooler than a microfibre one packed densely. Cotton or crystal cotton shells breathe and hold prints well; pure polyester shells feel slippery and trap heat against the skin. Our fabric types guide explains the shell fabrics in detail.

Comforter, razai or duvet?

These three words are used almost interchangeably in Pakistan, which causes confusion when buying.

  • A comforter is filled and quilted, and used as it comes. It is the usual choice in sets.
  • A razai is the traditional filled quilt, often heavier, often cotton-filled, sometimes made to order by a local dhunia.
  • A duvet is a plain filled insert that always goes inside a washable cover.

Our full comparison is in comforter, razai or duvet. The practical difference is washing: a duvet cover comes off and goes in the machine, while a comforter has to be washed whole — which is why a top sheet underneath is worth the trouble.

What a 7 piece set includes

A 7 piece comforter set in Pakistan usually means the filled comforter, a bedsheet, two pillow covers, two cushion covers and a matching extra piece — so one order covers the whole bed. It is the simplest way to buy if the room needs refreshing anyway, and it avoids the problem of a comforter that does not match the sheets.

Our navy and ivory damask, charcoal and pink floral and mint green blossom sets are all Rs 5,550 with free delivery and cash on delivery. If you only need the sheet, the bedsheet collection is Rs 2,399 a king set.

Five mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying on the print alone. Press the filling first; look at the pattern second.
  2. Buying one size down to save money. You will regret it on the first cold night.
  3. Choosing the heaviest available for a mild city. Overheating wakes you as surely as cold does.
  4. Ignoring the washing question. A heavy cotton-filled quilt is hard to dry in December fog.
  5. Storing it unwashed in March. Body oils left in the filling yellow it over the summer.

On that last point, our guide to the seasonal changeover covers putting winter bedding away properly.

Frequently asked questions

Which comforter filling is best in Pakistan?
Siliconised microfibre for most homes — light, warm and easy to dry. Cotton filling breathes better and lasts longer but is heavy and slow to dry in winter.

What size comforter do I need for a king bed?
Measure the mattress width and add about 20 inches so it hangs 10 inches each side. For most king beds in Pakistan that means roughly 90 × 100 inches or larger.

What is the difference between a comforter and a razai?
A comforter is factory-quilted and used as it comes. A razai is the traditional filled quilt, usually heavier and often cotton-filled. Both are used without a separate cover.

What does a 7 piece comforter set include?
Typically the filled comforter, a bedsheet, two pillow covers, two cushion covers and one further matching piece, so the whole bed is covered in a single purchase.

Is a heavier comforter always warmer?
Usually, but not always comfortable. Weight comes from how much filling is packed in; a very heavy quilt in a mild city or a heated room will leave you too hot to sleep.

How to Get the Smell Out of a Mattress

A mattress that smells is holding moisture, and masking it with spray makes it worse. The fix is dull and effective: dry it out, draw the smell out, and keep it from coming back.
