Walk into any bedding shop in Pakistan before winter and you will hear comforter, razai, quilt and duvet used almost interchangeably. They are not the same thing, and the difference decides how warm your bed is, how much you pay and whether you can wash it at home.

Comforter
A comforter is filled and stitched closed, with the design printed on the outside. You put it straight on the bed: no cover, no inserting, no buttons. That is its main advantage and also its main limitation, because when it needs washing, the whole thing goes in the machine.
Comforters usually come as part of a bedding set with a matching bedsheet and pillow covers, which is why the bed looks coordinated without any effort. Our 7 piece comforter sets include a filled king comforter, a bedsheet, four pillow covers and a cushion cover in one box.
Best for: people who want the bed to look finished and do not want to fight a duvet cover twice a month.
Razai
The traditional Pakistani razai is cotton-filled, heavy and genuinely warm — the standard in Punjab and KPK for generations. Its weight is part of why it feels comforting, and a good one lasts a decade if it is aired regularly and the cotton is re-carded every few years.
Razais are almost always used inside a razai cover, because the razai itself is difficult to wash and slow to dry.
Best for: cold northern winters, and anyone who likes real weight on the bed.
Duvet
A duvet is a plain white insert, filled with down or polyester fibre, that always goes inside a duvet cover. The cover carries the design, so you can change the look of the bed by changing the cover alone, and washing means washing just the cover.
Best for: people who like changing bedding often, or who want a hotel-style bed.
Watch out for: cheap polyester inserts that flatten within a season, and the annual struggle of getting the insert back into the cover.
Quilt or bedspread
Thin, lightly padded, and meant to sit on top of the bed for looks rather than warmth. Useful in Karachi, in air-conditioned rooms in summer, or as an extra layer in a guest room.
Which one for your city?
- Islamabad, Murree, Quetta, north Punjab, KPK: a razai, or a comforter plus a blanket underneath.
- Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan: a comforter is usually enough, with a blanket added on the coldest nights.
- Karachi, Hyderabad, coastal Sindh: a quilt or a light comforter; a full razai is too warm for most of the year.
Our winter bedding guide explains how to layer the bed underneath whichever you choose.
What to check before buying
- Weight. Ask the weight in kilograms, not just "double bed size". A 3 kg comforter and a 1.5 kg one look identical in the packet.
- Stitching. Closely spaced stitching stops the filling shifting into lumps. Widely spaced squares will bunch after a few washes.
- Fabric on top. Cotton mix breathes; pure polyester traps sweat, which is uncomfortable even in winter.
- Washability. If it cannot go in a home machine, factor in dry cleaning costs every season.
- What is in the box. "Bedding set" can mean anything from three pieces to seven. Check the list.
Caring for filled bedding
- Air it in sunlight for a few hours every few weeks. This matters more than washing.
- Wash a comforter on its own, on a cold gentle cycle, and dry it flat or on a wide line so the filling does not gather at one end.
- Shake it out each morning instead of leaving it folded flat — that keeps the filling lofted and warmer.
- Store it in a cotton bag in summer, not a sealed plastic bag, which traps moisture and causes a musty smell.
Frequently asked questions
Is a comforter warm enough for winter in Pakistan?
In most of the country, yes. In very cold cities add a blanket between the bedsheet and the comforter, which is cheaper than buying heavier bedding.
What is the difference between a razai and a comforter?
A razai is cotton-filled, heavier and normally used inside a cover. A comforter is lighter, stitched shut and used as the top layer with its design on show.
Do I need a cover for a comforter?
No. It is designed to be the top layer. Some people still use a light cover to reduce how often the comforter itself needs washing.
Can I wash a comforter at home?
Yes, on a cold gentle cycle and on its own. Dry it completely before putting it back on the bed, since damp filling develops a smell quickly.
How do I pay and how long is delivery?
Cash on delivery, free all over Pakistan, usually 3 to 5 working days.
