Most bedrooms in Pakistan are lit by a single white tube light or an energy saver in the centre of the ceiling. It lights the room evenly and flatly, which is fine for finding things and wrong for everything else. Good lighting is the cheapest upgrade a bedroom can get, and it does not need rewiring.
Why one ceiling light is not enough
A single bright source overhead does three things you do not want in a bedroom: it flattens the room so everything looks the same distance away, it casts hard shadows on faces, and it gives you only two choices — fully lit or fully dark. A room needs at least two levels of light.
The three layers
- General light: the ceiling light. Use it for cleaning and getting dressed.
- Task light: a lamp beside the bed for reading, or on the study table. This is the layer most bedrooms are missing.
- Mood light: anything soft and low — a small lamp on a shelf, a strip behind the headboard. It makes a room feel finished in photographs and in person.
You do not need all three switched on at once. The point is having the choice.
Warm or cool light?
| Light | Feels like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Warm (2700–3000K) | Yellow, like sunset | Bedrooms in the evening, lounges |
| Neutral (3500–4000K) | Natural daylight | Study tables, dressing areas, mirrors |
| Cool (5000K+) | Bright white, like a tube light | Kitchens and bathrooms, not bedrooms at night |
Cool white light suppresses the sleepiness that should build in the evening. If you change one thing in your bedroom, make it the bulb colour beside the bed. A lamp with switchable modes lets you use neutral light to work and warm light an hour before sleep — our rechargeable touch lamp has three modes for exactly that.
Lighting that survives load-shedding
Any lighting plan in Pakistan has to answer one question: what happens when the power goes? Options, from most to least useful:
- Rechargeable lamps. Charge from a phone charger or power bank and work anywhere in the house, with no wiring and no noise. The most practical answer for a bedroom.
- Emergency LED bulbs. They hold a charge and stay on when the mains fails, but only where a fitting already exists.
- UPS-backed circuits. Reliable but expensive, and the batteries need replacing every few years.
- Phone torches. What everyone actually uses, and it drains the battery you need for the rest of the evening.
One charged lamp on each side of the bed removes most of the inconvenience of an evening outage.
Small changes that make a big difference
- Move light off the ceiling. Two lamps at bed height instantly make a room feel calmer than one bright light above.
- Light the corners. A dark corner makes a room look smaller; a low lamp there pushes the walls out.
- Mind the mirror. Light should fall on your face, not on the mirror's surface, so a lamp beside the mirror beats one above it.
- Watch the glare. A bare bulb in view is uncomfortable. A shade, or a lamp that throws light downward, fixes it.
- Think about the switch. If you have to cross the room in the dark to turn something off, you will not use it.
Lighting and the rest of the room
Warm light changes how bedding looks. Deep colours — maroon, navy, emerald, chocolate — come alive under yellow light, while pale greys can look dull and slightly green. If your room is lit warmly in the evening, deeper bedsheet colours will look better than they did in the shop under white tube lights; our colour and design guide covers which shades suit which rooms.
A lamp is also a décor object during the day, so its shape matters as much as its light. Browse home décor for pieces that work on the same table.
Frequently asked questions
What colour light is best for a bedroom?
Warm white, around 2700 to 3000K. It is easier on the eyes in the evening and does not interfere with falling asleep the way cool white light does.
Are rechargeable lamps worth it in Pakistan?
Yes. A charged lamp keeps working through load-shedding, needs no wiring and can be moved from the bedside to the dining table or a study desk.
How many lights does a bedroom need?
At least two sources: the ceiling light plus one lamp beside the bed. Two bedside lamps are better if the room is shared.
Should the lamp be on the table or the wall?
A table lamp is simpler and can be moved. Wall lights free up table space but need wiring, so they suit a room you own rather than rent.
Do you deliver across Pakistan?
Yes, free delivery all over Pakistan with cash on delivery, usually in 3 to 5 working days.
